What is Whipple surgery?

Whipple surgery is the primary surgical technique for treating pancreatic cancer occurring in the head of the pancreas. During Whipple surgery, the surgeon removes the head of the pancreas, the duodenum (first part of the small intestine), gallbladder, part of the bile duct and part of the stomach to effectively locate and remove any tumors and nearby lymph nodes and blood vessels if necessary. The surgeon will then reconnect the remaining portions of the pancreas, bile duct and stomach to the small intestine to allow proper digestion of food.

Who needs Whipple surgery?

Whipple surgery is commonly recommended for those with pancreatic cancer or cancer of the bile duct or duodenum. A pancreaticoduodenectomy procedure is often the only option that can lead to a potential cure for disease. In addition to treating cancer, those with chronic pancreatitis may find the procedure helpful as well.
