Chattanoogans will have another resource for surgery with the addition of a colorectal and general surgeon. University Surgical Associates is excited to add G. Alan Hyde, MD to our team of surgical experts. Dr. Hyde specializes in minimally invasive general surgery, and colon and rectal surgery. He treats patients with conditions such as diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, colon cancer, and fistulas, just to name a few. He also treats general surgery conditions like gallbladder problems, hernias, appendicitis and more.
Originally from Winchester, Tennessee, Dr. Hyde attended Baylor School in Chattanooga before completing his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University. He knew from an early age that he wanted to become a physician but didn’t gravitate to surgery until he was well into his medical school training.
“With surgery, I liked the idea that there’s a diagnosable problem and the ability to fix that problem for my patients in a timely fashion. It’s gratifying to address specific issues people are facing and help them feel better,” says Dr. Hyde. “I was drawn to colorectal surgery as a subspeciality because of the great mix of robotics, laparoscopic techniques and the opportunity to affect people’s lives in a positive way. Effective colorectal cancer treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach, and I enjoy working alongside oncologists and other medical professionals to provide comprehensive care.”
Medical Education & Training
Dr. Hyde earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Memphis, Tennessee. He completed an internship and general surgery residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga.
He continued his education with a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York, New York. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
Dr. Hyde also joins the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga Department of Surgery faculty to train residents in general and colorectal surgery procedures. He’s excited to come back to Chattanooga to work with the mentors and teachers who have helped shape him as a surgeon as well as educate the next class of upcoming surgeons.
“As a surgeon, beginning a surgical practice is what you work toward for your entire career. I’m excited to do that in a community that I’ve always felt attached to and where I know I can make a positive impact – that in and of itself is very rewarding,” says Dr. Hyde. “To work beside those who have mentored and taught you and to follow in the footsteps of people you respect is an added bonus.”
“A great deal of my colorectal fellowship was spent at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, learning about the very latest medical and surgical treatment options. I knew that I wanted to implement those advanced approaches to help people beat colorectal cancer – and at USA we can address many of the very complex cancer concerns as effectively as a major cancer treatment center,” says Dr. Hyde. “We have the tools, the strategies and the comprehensive team working together to offer the very best in colorectal cancer care.”
