Colectomy FAQs

A colectomy is a surgical procedure where part or all of the colon is removed. Colectomy surgery for colorectal cancer often involves the surgical removal of the cancerous part of the colon, a small part of healthy-looking tissue surrounding the cancer area, as well as nearby lymph nodes. The remaining parts of the colon are then attached together.

There are a few different options available for colectomy surgery. Surgery options can include the removal of all or some of the colon and nearby organs. These include:

  • Partial Colectomy / Subtotal Colectomy – only part of the colon is removed
  • Total Colectomy – the entire colon is removed
  • Hemicolectomy – the entire right or left portion of the colon is removed
  • Proctocolectomy – the entire colon and rectum are removed

Often, additional surgeries are needed to ensure the digestive system can still function. If you have your colon and rectum removed, your surgeon can perform a colostomy, ileostomy, or a J-pouch. Consult with your surgeon about which type of colectomy is best for you.

Depending on your situation, you will either have an open colectomy or a laparoscopic colectomy. A laparoscopic colectomy is a minimally-invasive option that usually improves recovery times. Patients can expect to stay 3-7 days at the hospital after surgery and should avoid stair climbing for a week and heavy lifting for six weeks once home.

Consult with your provider to see what colectomy recovery may look like for you.
