Hypospadias FAQs

Hypospadias is a congenital condition, present at birth, where a boy’s urethra opening is not centrally located at the tip of his penis. The abnormal opening is located elsewhere, normally on the underside of the penis. This may cause a downward curvature and spraying while urinating. Congenital hypospadias is more common in boys with a family history of the condition.

Hypospadias in newborns can range from mild to severe. Mild hypospadias usually causes misdirection of urine and mild curvature during an erection. where severe hypospadias causes a more pronounced curvature of the penis. The different types of hypospadias, ranging from mild to severe, include:

  • Glanular Hypospadias – the urethra opening is still on the head of the penis, but not at the tip.
  • Subcorornal Hypospadias – the urethra opening is just below the head of the penis.
  • Distal Hypospadias – the urethra opening is between the head and the middle of the side of the penis.
  • Midshaft Hypospadias – the urethra opening is halfway down the side of the penis.
  • Penoscrotal Hypospadias – the urethra opening is where the shaft meets the scrotum.
  • Perineal Hypospadias – the urethra opening is located along the center of the abnormally divided scrotum sac.
