Carotid Artery Disease Treatment in Chattanooga

The carotid arteries are major blood vessels on each side of your neck that provide your brain with oxygen-rich blood. These arteries can become blocked or narrowed due to the buildup of plaque. Over time, this buildup of plaque can cause stiffening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and result in stroke. If you have a carotid artery blockage or have been diagnosed with carotid artery stenosis, it’s important to seek treatment as soon as possible.

Carotid Artery Disease FAQs

Carotid artery disease is the stiffening of one or both carotid arteries due to the buildup of plaque. If not treated, the carotid arteries can become obstructed, and blood does not flow properly to the brain, resulting in stroke.

Risk factors for developing carotid artery disease include:

  • Atherosclerosis
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Gender (males have greater risk)
  • Age
  • Family history of stroke

Unfortunately, you may not present carotid artery disease symptoms until you have a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke. It’s important to see a vascular doctor if you have risk factors for developing carotid artery disease to greatly reduce your chance of stroke.

If you present any of the following signs of stroke, call 911:

  • Confusion / Memory loss
  • Blurred vision or vision loss
  • Part of or one side of your body has become numb or weak
  • Trouble speaking, thinking or reasoning

There are three main types of treatment for patients with carotid artery disease:

  1. TCAR Procedure
  2. Carotid Endarterectomy
  3. Carotid Stenting

The specific type of treatment you receive will vary based on the severity of your condition. Schedule a consultation with one of our vascular surgeons to learn more.
