Simple Skincare Tips

March 2nd, 2017

We all want clearer, more radiant skin, right?

Sometimes the best advice is simple.  Lisa Smith, M.D., pediatric surgeon with University Surgical Associates, works with young people every day and has developed these three easy tips to help you get clear skin.

The best part? They work whether you're 15 or 50!

1) Cleanse & Exfoliate

Use a gentle abrasion to exfoliate. Recommended products include:

  • A soft washcloth – no “scrubbing” or rough rubbing needed.
  • CVS disposable facial pads
  • Olay ProX cleansing System
  • Clarisonic Cleaning System

Use a salicylic acid-based cleanser. Recommended products include:
  • Oil-free acne cleansers from CVS or Neutrogena
  • Olay Total Effects Daily Cleanser
  • Philosophy Clear Days Ahead
  • Clarisonic Acne Daily Clarifying Cleanser or Gentle Hydro Cleanser

2) Tone

Use an astringent to tone. Recommended products include:
  • Witch hazel
  • Neutrogena Pore Oil-Eliminating astringent
  • Origins Zero Oil Pore Purifying Toner
  • Perricone MD Intense Pore Minimizer

3) Moisturize & Protect

Moisturizing is a very important step in this process – don’t leave it off! When selecting a moisturizer, select a product with light sunscreen. We recommend:
  • Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer
  • Neutrogena Daytime Oil-free Moisturizer with SPF 30
  • Any of the “high end” moisturizers

Final Tip: If your face starts to get red, move to a softer exfoliating product and avoid the cleansers with abrasives in them. If two products that you use have salicylic acid, use one with and one without it for a while. Do not eliminate any of the above steps, and never scrub hard on your skin. For any spot treatment of pimples, use a dot of benzoyl peroxide-based cream. Benzoyl peroxide cleansers can be aggravating to sensitive skin, so they don’t work for all people. Read all ingredient labels carefully.
