University Surgical Expands Pediatric Surgery Program

University Surgical Associates is excited to welcome Syamal Dave Bhattacharya, M.D. to the team of pediatric surgeons providing care for children and young adults in the Chattanooga area.

Dr. Bhattacharya will see patients and perform minor surgeries at University Surgical’s office in the Erlanger Medical Mall and planned and emergent surgeries at Children’s at Erlanger. He joins pediatric surgeons Michael G. Carr, M.D., Joseph “Pete” Kelley, M.D., Lisa A. Smith, M.D., and Curt S. Koontz, M.D.

Dr. Bhattacharya attended medical school at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, Tennessee. He completed his residency in general and thoracic surgery at Duke University, where he also served as chief resident. While at Duke he also completed a research fellowship in the Department of Surgical Sciences. Dr. Bhattacharya joined University Surgical after completing a fellowship in pediatric surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

During his training, Dr. Bhattacharya helped author numerous peer-reviewed publications and abstracts and wrote chapters in several books about applied laboratory science and contemporary surgical management of liver, biliary tract and pancreatic disease. His academic awards and honors include academic and merit scholarships from Washington University, University of Tennessee Health Science Center Alumni Achievement Award for Biomedical Research, the Society of University Surgeons Young Investigator Travel Award for the European Society of Surgical Research, the American College of Surgeons Leadership Scholarship and the Southeastern Surgical Congress Gold Medal Forum Award. He is an affiliate member of the American College of Surgeons, a candidate member of the Association for Academic Surgery, and a member of the Southeastern Surgical Congress.

University Surgical Associates' pediatric surgeons manage general surgery issues in children, from appendicitis to gallbladder disease, as well as the subspecialty cases such as congenital deformities, newborn surgery, urologic reconstructive surgery, chest wall reconstruction, childhood cancers and minimally-invasive surgery.

Specially trained to provide surgical care from newborn through teenage years, USA pediatric surgeons are involved from diagnosis and preoperative preparation to the operative and post-operative management of surgical problems.
