Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans, resulting in more than 2.5 million injuries treated in emergency rooms each year. They can result in hip fractures, broken bones, and head injuries. Falls are responsible for 734,000 hospitalizations and more than 21,700 deaths each year. Falls threaten a senior’s safety and independence, both physically and financially.
Trauma Awareness, supported by the American Trauma Society, focuses on a different aspect of trauma each year during its annual awareness campaign. This year the campaign centers on Safe Steps for Seniors.
