You've been referred to a usa breast surgeon...now what?
USA surgeons evaluate women for breast problems including lumps, abnormal mammograms, pain, and nipple discharge. Most of the women we evaluate are found to NOT have breast cancer as a cause for their symptoms or problem. Generally we expect you to have a mammogram before your office visit so that we can personally review those images at the time of your visit. We will take your medical history and perform a breast exam as well. Based on the reason for your visit, you may need further evaluation in the office that day with ultrasound or may even need a biopsy.
Biopsies are done in the office with local anesthesia and using either a special mammogram set-up or ultrasound for guidance. Often the biopsy can be done on the same day you are evaluated and doesn’t require special preparation. Results are back within a couple of days.
USA surgeons also perform breast cancer surgery as well as surgery for noncancerous conditions. We evaluate and follow women who are at high risk for breast cancer because of family history.
