At 91 years old, Betty Lingerfelt has been through a lot – and she’s a tough lady. She lives alone, continues to drive herself to do her grocery shopping, and pays her own bills. In recent years, her health has been a challenge – she has diabetes and has struggled with circulation issues, wounds on her legs, and the stents that are sometimes needed to drain fluid buildup.

“About 10 years ago, I had fallen in my garage and skinned my lower leg. It was about a 4-inch square where the skin was taken right off. That’s when I first came under the care of Shana Hilson, wound care specialist at USA,” remembers Betty. “I knew she specialized in wounds, and she did some kind of skin graft on my leg. It healed up beautifully. That was the beginning of a lasting relationship with Shana. She’s helped take care of me in many different ways since then.

One of the benefits Betty has enjoyed at USA Wound Care is the coordination with other specialists who helped address a number of her concerns. Once it was an irritation of her skin that had other physicians stumped. Another time, Shana was concerned about a skin cancer that had been removed from Betty’s head. She worked with a skin cancer specialist to ensure Betty was getting the very best care.

“I started having trouble with the sore oozing on my head, and Shana recommended another biopsy to ensure all the cancer had been removed. She sent me to Dr. Valle who did several biopsies before confirming that the cancer was gone. Because I’m diabetic, the wound was not healing from the bottom and would likely take longer to heal. Shana knew what to do to help jumpstart the healing process,” Betty says.

When it comes to wound care – and the overall quality of care that Betty has received – she’s quick to recommend Shana for both her expertise in caring for hard to heal wounds and for the way she connects with and cares for her patients.

COMPASSIONATE CARE

When it comes to wound care – and the overall quality of care that Betty has received – she’s quick to recommend Shana for both her expertise in caring for hard to heal wounds and for the way she connects with and cares for her patients.

“Shana is wonderful. There’s never been another health care provider that’s any sweeter or has better bedside manner than Shana. She’s never in a hurry, and she always listens to what’s going on with me and helps find the solution,” says Betty. “Even though I have a good primary care doctor, she knows me even better. She can look me over and tell me what to do – and it works. The care I’ve received from Shana and her team has been phenomenal!”
