Spider Veins

Spider veins, like varicose veins, occur when veins become weak or damaged. Often, spider veins are not painful, but because these visible, thin red, blue, or purple lines look like “webs” or branches, many people with spider veins wish to have them removed. Spider veins are common in the legs and on the face.

Spider Vein FAQs

Spider veins are thin red, blue or purple flat or slightly raised small lines, usually on a person’s face or legs. They usually are painless but may cause some discomfort from time to time.

Spider veins occur when healthy veins are damaged or weakened. Risk factors for spider veins include:

  • Genetics, sex, and age – Family history of spider veins as well as being female may increase your risk for spider veins. Additionally, spider veins become more common as you get older.
  • Sun damage – UV light from the sun can damage blood vessels causing spider veins on the face.
  • Standing or sitting for long time periods – Veins work harder when someone is in the same position for 4 or more hours. Not changing positions frequently can cause spider veins in the legs.
  • Being overweight – Extra body weight places more pressure on veins.
  • Excess pressure in the face – Pushing during childbirth as well as forceful coughing, sneezing, or vomiting can cause spider veins in the face.
  • Past vein damage or blood clots – Previous vein trouble can cause spider veins as well.

While spider veins are generally harmless, they can be a sign to pay attention to your health. Are you taking care of your skin? Watching your weight? Getting adequate exercise? Making sure you are living a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of other more serious vein and vascular problems in the future.

Spider veins can often be treated at home or by a professional. If you wish to treat them at home, you can try compression socks or stockings. If you’d like a doctor’s help with spider vein removal, you have the following options:

  • Sclerotherapy
  • Laser treatments
  • Endovenous laser therapy

Treating Spider Veins

If you want to treat your spider veins at home, you can try wearing compression socks or stockings. These place pressure on the veins in the lower legs to improve blood flow and circulation and can usually be found at the pharmacy or drugstore.

If you wish to treat your spider veins professionally, University Surgical Associates is happy to meet with you and coordinate the appropriate level of care. Our providers recommend sclerotherapy for spider vein surgery.

  • Sclerotherapy – An in-office procedure where a solution is injected into your leg to close off the vein and reroute blood through healthier veins until eventually, the closed off vein fades away. USA does provide saline injections for spider vein treatment.

University Surgical Associates is pleased to be a top choice for treating spider veins in Chattanooga, TN. With multiple locations in the area, we look forward to helping you find the best spider vein treatment near you. Contact us today to schedule an appointment with a spider vein doctor.
